The Offense: Disobeying spatial boundaries or attempting to harvest out of turn.
The Context: The boundaries between harvesting zones are fiercely protected. When a lower-ranked diver (Hagun) overstepped her geographic boundaries or ignored the warnings of the Sanggun, physical intervention was required.
The Artifact: Son-beol was a form of physical restraint where higher-ranked divers literally held a lower-ranked diver back, physically blocking her from entering the water. The corresponding discursive object represents this tactile, bodily enforcement of hierarchy—a physical manifestation of the community’s grip on the individual.
