Through close collaboration with the existing Haenyeo community on Jeju Island, Céline discovered that deep social bonding and unwavering mutual trust were the absolute keys to their survival in a perilous marine environment. However, this profound solidarity was not maintained by sentimentality alone, but enforced through strict, invisible governance.
To bring these intangible dynamics to light, Céline conceptualized the fictional Haenyeo Collective Association (HCA). Rather than creating a mere historical archive, the HCA functions as a speculative institutional framework—a narrative vehicle designed to externalize the rigid authority, spatial policing, and tacit disciplinary mechanisms embedded within the community.
